Fiji passes landmark audit bill enhancing SAI’s independence

On 12 March 2025, the Parliament of Fiji unanimously passed the Audit Bill 2024, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the independence and effectiveness of SAI Fiji. This new legislation repeals the outdated Audit Act of 1969, introducing a modern framework aligned with international standards and best practices.

Key provisions of the Audit Bill 2024 include:

  • an expanded mandate – the SAI Head is empowered to conduct financial, performance and compliance audits, as well as special investigations, enhancing the scope and depth of public sector oversight

  • protection measures – the Bill provides legal protections for the SAI Head and staff, ensuring they can perform their duties without fear of personal liability, except in cases of bad faith.

In 2019 we drafted proposed amendments to the Audit Act. Thanks to initiatives led by the SAI, ongoing advocacy, development partner support and the network of Fijian people passionate about improving their country, the Parliament has now enhanced the ability of the SAI to properly perform its role.

The passage of this Bill reflects Fiji's commitment to transparency, accountability and good governance, and reinforces the importance of an independent and robust auditing institution in the public sector.

This legislative advancement is expected to bolster public confidence in public financial management and set a precedent for similar reforms in the region.
